SAM HEUGHAN TALKING ABOUT OUTLANDER, HORSE RIDING, FOOD PORN, BEING AN ACTOR AND WILLIAM SHATNER - RINGCON 2015

RINGCON 2015 - SAM HEUGHAN PANEL

So here we are, finally I had the time to listen carefully to Sam's panel to write it down.
Ooh, yes I must admit it has been so terrible, having to listen and listen again and again to Sam's voice in my hears.... really devastating, uh??? Kiddin'...listen to Sam's voice it's everytime a great experience..you fans know what I'm talking about.
Obviously, there will be many mistakes, some missing words, english is not my language and I'm not a traslator. You will find here only some of the many answers to the question fans asked to Sam.
It was a great panel, Sam was brilliant as always, lot of laughs and interesting things that maybe help us to know him better.
As soon as I'll add some pictures that I took that day, so...as they'd say, stay tuned!

Q Thank you for being here. What was the most difficult role you played and the most fun?

SH.  Thank you for having me. Jamie Fraser is probably the most all-ecompassing challenging role.
It seems it take up a lot of time but I did play Batman and bruce Wayne in a arena tour, when we actually came to Cologne, maybe 3 years ago? and we travelled all over the world, we went to south america,we did las vegas ,we did  the staple center in L.A., Europe and it was a great show with a lot of flying and fighting and acrobatics.
So that was probably the most physical of jobs, but Jaime has certainly been the most all-encompassing, i said that word twice now, challenging of parts.
An arena tour?
Yes, an arena tour. At the back of the stage we had a hundred foot high backscreen, we had a batmobile , that was designed by professor Gordon Murray that designed the formula 1 car and i got to play Batman and that was terrific, really big spectacular.

Q. I just wanted to know if you had ridden before you started filming outlander?

SH I think you're talking horses here....Yes, I've ridden in a few jobs before, I hope to ride again, oh god, so I think that every actor, when you start out, you have to write on your cv or your special skills on something called Spotlight. So you basically put down absolutely everything you've ever thought of, and lie, completely lie. I mean i've written rythmn gymnastics, I can speak fluent german, of course, russian,  hungarian, Q.singin?? S.H. absolutely, opera singer trained, and so when you have to go for a job you also bend the truth a little bit, and when they say can you horse riding? You say  yes, yes I was brought up on a farm before I could walk I was riding.
And a few times I had that experience and then I was on a job, I did a western, in Spain, a sort of drama documentary, about Billy the kid, and I had to ride a horse, and it wasn't until I was on the horse they told me the horse once trained with guns, so I was riding along and this horse freacked out and went down a ravine and then the same happened again in Egypt, so I didn't have a really good track record with horses.
But on this show, Outlander, has been terrific. We have an amazing stunt team, great riders and  terrific horses and I love everyday going to  work. I rode Sleepy, I've probably talked about him a lot, this black frisian, who is terrific and actually Donas the horse, if you read the book, know the story  jamie gets Donas. We did change horses. I got a new horse called Pinocchio, who I didn't like at all. He kept slobbering on my shoulder and kicking me and things which is probably perfect for Donas. But Sleepy is back in Season 2.

Q. In the wedding episode the portayal of intimacy has never been shown in that way in a tv show before ...can you talk about us about shooting that episode, how you felt about it?

S.H. Yes...back to riding ...again...yes...
Yes it was something in the book that we knew happen and we read the script quite early on and  WE knew that the whole episode was centered around this one night and we just knew this was a pivotal part in their relationship. We wanted to show the progression of the Jamie and Claire's relationship and  then falling in love or getting to know each others.
There seems to be three stages  or three stages of love making, or maybe even, you know, the act of consumating the marriage, and then enjoying it for what it was, and then going somewhere deeper. And also we had this fantastic  text as well and  it was just about two people dont' know each other and they're quite naive and just learning to feel quite confortable with each other. I think that Anna Foester, who directed, did a terrific job. She's great, she was our first female director and also directed the last episode in season one, and she's currently directing  Underworld that Tobias is in so  that should be really interesting.
It was all I guess about intimacy and then us trusting each other, and I think simily with the scenes with Tobias at the end of the season, we reharsal those kind of scene ,worked out what we wanted the viewer to see and feel and then ultimately on the day you have to just kind of jump in and let yourself go and do what happens. Those days on set are really strange  but the're very exciting.
It takes a lot of concentration but you've known when you're shooting something that you feel is honest and I hipe you guys enjoyed it.

Q. Lyam, in his panel, was talking about insicurity, that all actors are inside a bit insicure, and for Jamie you broke up your body quite a lot, .you enjoy sports and you did a good job on it. I'm actually interested in  if you had a kind of insicurity as a teenager or kid that you actually like on you, for example for me are my glasses, when I was a teen ager I didn't like it and now I'm happy because it's covers my eyerings when i'm tired

S.H. Yeah, absolutely. I think, wow, the list is endless, where do we start?
I mean everyone has insicurity.
I wear glasses, I've done since at very young age, and  I hated them at school, I hated them and I remember the day I've got contact lenses and the world was so changed and so I guess maybe I'm inside insicure but I wear them and I've grown to like them.
Now i guess this is to grow up and get older, you learn to love those things about yourself  and maybe, as an actor, you question yourself, maybe a little more because people is always looking at you so you think how does this appear or what this has affect on other people. So I can see that it could be a difficult profession if you are very insicure, but also I think it makes you face up to those insicurities  and accept them and that's what make us human being and interesting people and interesting charachters. And when someone wears glasses  maybe has a manierism that maybe you could use or yes......I find those things interesting...

Q.What do you like the most of your character?

S.H. He is .....a ginger,.... he wears a kilt to work every day. I love it, I love wearing my kilt to work everyday. Q. Where is it?  It's in Amsterdam, you need to go and speak to someone there. it had a night out, it said i'm not going any further ..I mean all those things, I love going to work everyday. I'm very lucky and apparently sometimes I get paid  to do that, sometimes...

Q. The broken mill at Lallybroch, how long did you stay in the water and how cold was it?

S.H.I think you could almost see how cold it is, it's pretty cold.
It was a fun scene to do, we had the back prostetic on. So in the show obviously there's Jamie's back scars which is a prostethic that takes 3 to 4 hours in the morning to put on, and we were worried that they may come off in the water and I was in there for a quite long time, I'd say maybe an hour at that time, but I realized that I was getting cold when I looked.....we had a stuntman who was in wetsuit standing next to me, so the water was quite strong and every time I went under and came out, he would be under to make sure I was ok and come up with me.
And I looked to him after about an hour and he was hacking and I was as "wow he's really cold, so I must be really cold".
The worst part was that when we finished  shooting  my section, then they turn the camera on the other side of the banck, so i could be out of the water and they could shoot the horses coming along and  Claire and Jenny. And I went to get warm and I warmed up, and they came back and they were like .."Sam, you need to go back in, we need to get one more shot" and I was ".. ooh God..." so we went all back and did another shot but yeah I really enjoyed that day. It was fun and the mill is incredible and it's still working till these days .

Q. Do you consider yourself more of a baker or a cook, do you have a special recipe you're good at or you're more like a guy who like to operate a microwave?

S.H. I'm really glad you brought this up actually, now we're talking tv shows!
I don't know if you have this show here,we have the great british bake off.
People have to bake each week some cakes or a particular challenge, and they get broken down to a winner....I love cookery program, it's like food porn, I like nothing more than watching a bit of food porn, I like the scottish girl, Flora Sheridan, she didn't do well at the end but it's a great show.
I'm more of a cook than a baker, Q. Do you have a special recipe? S.H. What do you like? I'm a sort of one pot cook, put it all in a pot and...but I  make good porridge actually.

Non so se c'è qui, ma noi abbiamo uno show chiamato The great british bake off. è un bello show.

Q. Diana told you the end of the story and my question is how difficult is it to keep it to yourself? (this was from a friend Anna Schimidt  @Wassiljevna )

S.H. umm well, yes. Diana told me some stuff, yessss...
I feel very proviledged She'weaving this enormous story, many plotlines and people and characters, but it's interesting to know what happens. But I don't know, ultimately, day to day, you have to forget about that stuff, and, as we're saying before, how far you read ahead or you plan ahead and ultimately every day we just have to go in  and think about that scene on that particular day or even that emotion or whatever it is, so we don't have to think too far ahead.
However if you have an idea of season 2 there's a lot more that begins to be played out in timelines and other stuff..... I'm gonna be really vague.

Q. What's your funniest memory from set?

S.H. This morning I was going to tell the story about the horse, because Duncan's horse has flatulence.
However probably the most funny comes from Duncan Lacroix  or Graham McTavish  and Graham is (watching his back) has on many occasion impressed with his bravery or...lack of.
So the first scenario was when we were shooting the ground attack and we were shooting a night shoot and I'm sitting in, basically, in a tent with him waiting for our scene, and it's pitchblack, nighttime and raining and cold and is mud and a tractor was going past us with lightning equipment and I could see him getting more and more tense and like watching "...ooh ooh ooh" and I was looking at him and ! thought nothing is going to happen...
but he was getting worried that the tractor was going to run into the tent and then before  I knew it a bit of the lighting equipment actually came into the tent missing myself and Graham who was already outside the door, he was gone, and I went outside and he was like "oh oh oh, well, I mean, i saved your life", and I said  "what??" and then he proceeed to sell all the crew that he saved my life.
Then there was another scenario, when we were shooting in a village and we had  a big highland cow and it wasn't very happy. We all were standing in the square and it started to rear and buck and these things are really big, much bigger than a horse and I was looking at Graham and he was standing like this..and he said to me "I know my escape routes, I know exactly where I'm going  I'm going over that wall, , if that things move... I'm going over that wall and I'm safe!". I love him.

Q. Is his (Graham's) horse riding going any better?

S.H. He's going to kill me.  Graham is a very good horse rider but he choses not to, "oh no, no i won't be doing that,so i'll do the close up and then my stunt double can do that", but then when he does ride he comes in with this hand on his hip looking all macho and we had this scene recently when he rode in, and we were all laughing because he is so being full of bravado and we knew fine well he was complaining and din't want to do that shot. No no He's such a wonderful man, he's amazing.
He's goin'to kill me.

E' migliorato nell'andare a cavallo?
No è una persona meravigliosa, eccezionale.
..mi ucciderà.

Q. I'd like to ask you, if one day you could chose to go to the past where would you like to go or you'd rather go to the future?

S.H. This is a good question. Yes. I'm a total sci fi gig, I love sci-fi so I'd love to go to the future .I'm really excited about Star wars, I was a huge fan of Battlestar galactica when I was growing up, Star trek, I absolutely adore the next generation and Deep space 9, and I'm working with these people, it's unbelieveble, Ron More, Ira they wrote these shows and I get to work with them, it'sincredible.
And recently I've been having a little twitter banter with  WIlliam Shatner, he's a god!
So I'd rather go back to the past...no, so I think future.

Quindi passato...no, penso andrei nel futuro.

Q. What about missing things from future when you go back to the past

S. H. We constantly have discussions on set like why just claire didn't bring back a machine gun or something just like when she went to Culloden  or whatever? There are so many questions you know, the whole history could be changed, but I guess that's why love this show, you think what if this happens and we certainly deal in our show with the fact that just our presence there in 1700 how does that change the future  or has a ripple effect, I think it's really interesting.

Q.  I'm a friend of Laphroaig and you went at their event this year, so what's your favourite whisky?

S.H. well, yes Laphroaig is my favourite whisky. I was flown by them to a small island in scotland called Islay which is where a lot of whisky are made but it has a very particular character which is that kind of whisky you drink, it just burns, it's smoky, it tastes like someone put peat in your water and I just love it! It's really delicious and I had a great time on the island, I've been shown around all these distilleries, learning about whisky .But I've tried some german whisky and it's pretty good .

Q. Have you watche Firefly, yet ?

S.H. Have I watched Firefly? wow what's your fav character? the one with the woman's name... Jane. I watched years ago, when it first came out and it's such a shame that it's not continued. Nathan Fillion is so good!

Q. You as an actor continuously confront with your own voice so how is that for you?

S. H. Yes, not only my voice, but.. yeah, it's something you have to get used, I guess, growing up, and in my earliest as an actor I worked on my voice a lot. I did a classical training in the UK. For me it was a way into a character on stage, because you have to project, and you didn't have one of this thing (mic) so you have to learn to how to speak to the back of the auditorium.
So it was definitely something I worked on and I think has developed.
And I think actually the voice is really important in tv as well, we were talking about, the panel earlier today, being dubbed in a different language, and I think the voice tell half the story and I think you lose that if you are dubbed.

Q. Actually talking about the possible season 3, how are you looking forward to aging and playing a much elder Jamie then?

S.H. I mean it would be terrific, we don't know anything, we are hopeful. We're still shooting season 2 so it's kind of hard to think about, but we obviously I've thinked about it, I guess it's up to you to keep watching and enjoy our show, but yeah, it would be terrific and we certanly are beginning to have conversation, if were going to have the season, what would we do, ecc. ecc, and I think book 3 is a terrific book. There's a lot that happens, that would be an even bigger adventure to go on.
Let's our finger crossed.

Q. did you shoot in Edimburgh for season 2?

S.H. We haven't shot in Edimburgh, we havent shoot that part of the book yet, but I imagine it's quite difficult to shoot in that part and, also, at the present, it doesn't quite look as it was then, but Gary Steel , who's our designer who does all the sets, has made some amazing sets for season 2, not only the scottish stuff, but the parisian. He's incredible and when you see it, you won't believe it's just a set in a studio,You'll think it's real just it's vast .

Q. Do you have any embarassing story or funny story from audition, not only from Outlander? The interviewer says that the commercial ones are the worse.

S.H. They tell you how much you're going to make, so in your mind you've spent the money and in fact you probably go and do spend the money, and then you realize you're in debt so you go to the commercial audition and they ask you to ice skate, pretending that you're selling some beer ,so you're standing there  (skating) ...I never got the job....

Q. You said that the last two episodes of season one were a challenge for you, a gift as an actor, is there any new challenge in season 2, a particular scene or episode you've already filmed or you're  going to shoot?

S.H. Yes absolutely, yes, without giving away too much, season 2 feels very different, the view is taken to this new world in Paris, the characters are trying to find who they are and where they are . Jamie is not the central focus of season 2, but he's still coming to terms to what happened to him and the trauma, so the characters don't even know who they are and they trying to find their way. So yes the whole time, this whole season 2 is a challenge, because the characters all moved on and move forward, so what we saw in season one, the wedding night or the relationships, we will never see again because that was that time, a new relationship, a young love, and now they've progressed, Claire is pregnant, they're going to be parents, which is terrific, so this whole different facts are involved in season 2 so it's ally a journey of discovery .

Q.Just another question, do you remember your first time on a stage, as you grow up in teather?

S.H. yes,I do, Ii've had quite few experiences but they're all pretty bad. The first time I was on a main stage it was a shakesperare play and i was playing Theseus, in Midsummer night dream and I had to
end the show, I'd won the speach at the very end, so there was a sort of silent, everyone down, I felt confident,I walked up to the front of the stage and I was about to speak and... I ...just.... completely.... forgot my line and I waited and waited, I could hear people in the audience laughing and then I turned around and there was just like "...what the fuck..." and luckily one of my friend came and helped me out but it was terrifying and I vowed never to act again.

Q. What do you think about what fans do to make you win awards like radio times?

S. H. Our fans are amazingly supportive from the beginning. We won a terrific amounts of fan awards, people's choice last year, we won the radio times award.
They're countless the things that our fans have sorted to got together and mobilized and done for us. We've just being nominated for the people's choice this year so thank you again.
I really mean, these are the awards that mean anything , we don't  really care about the other ones, we don't , there wasn't  something voted by you guys, so thank you very much for your all support.

In November 2015 I attended my first sci-fi convention in Bonn, the Ring Con, the latest edition, unfortunately.
The reason for participation was the presence of most of the cast of Outlander, the Tv series, and of the author Diana Gabaldon, that I follow for some time, but also the opportunity to meet new friends scattered throughout Italy  the i've met only virtually thanks to this new passion in common.
As soon as possible I put a report a bit more detailed of the event and especially i hope to be able to write down the text of the Outlander panel ... for now, since it's my blog, I put just a picture that sums up all the beautiful emotions.
This is Sam Heughan that recognizes a fan, and the fan is me, during his afternoon panel. I would not have ever expected, once again he proved to be a special person. I do not put it to brag but to let people know, to those who still ignore it, what a beautiful and special person this guy is, who never lets anyone down and can even remember the faces of those who have already encountered.
Fame does not seem to have changed him and we hope it won't ever..
It was a very nice moment, given that the I did not even realize it, and we remember it laughing with friends that were there ... just a little to make the fans happy! Thanks Sam!

CESTINI DI PASTA PHYLLO CON VERDURE E FETA - PHYLLO PASTRY BASKETS WITH SAUTE VEGGIES AND FETA CHEESE

Io ho usato uno stampo in silicone .

For 12 baskets:
a packet of pasta phyllo (You will use only half) a yellow pepper a purple striped eggplant 4 zucchini 1 package Feta cheese 1 onion  mint oil salt and pepper

Cut the dough into squares of about 10 cm per side, brushing each sheet with oil (I used it 5 for each basket) and coat  the exterior of the molds for mini muffins with the dough. I used a silicone mold. Bake themat 170 about as long as they are golden and crispy. Remove from the oven and set aside.
Slice the onion and brown it in a pan with extra virgin olive oil and mint, add zucchini cut into small cubes and toss them until they are cooked, "al dente". Remove them from the pan and proceed in the same way with the eggplant. Meanwhile cook the pepper, always cut into cubes, in a microwave oven, for about 8 minutes (alternatively in the pan as for the other vegetables). Combine all vegetables in a bowl and allow it to chilly, combine feta cut into cubes and fill the baskets with the mixture.
